The Lancashire Skills Hub has made key investments in skills provision for both the workforce of today and the future workforce and continues to seek investment for Lancashire.

Lancaster Teaching Block

University of Cumbria

The Lancaster Teaching Block is a £9m facility with 10 large classrooms and 220 seat lecture theatre.

The new facility provides capacity to train an additional 580 students, helping to meet the demand for health and social care services in Lancashire, which is increasing all the time due to an ageing population and improving life expectancy, with the result that some vacancies are getting harder and harder to fill.

Marine Engineering Centre – Fleetwood Nautical Campus

Blackpool & The Fylde College

The £1.2m Marine Engineering Centre opened at Fleetwood Nautical Campus in 2017. It is a state-of-the-art facility, designed in conjunction with industry, to provide first-class training in a real-world working environment which mirrors the facilities cadets will experience when working as officers at sea. It includes:

  • a marine propulsion plant, including medium speed marine diesel engine with reduction gearbox and propeller shaft
  • diesel generators, auxiliary boiler, pumps, purifiers, air compressors, heat exchangers and refrigeration training rigs
  • equipment for machining, hand fitting and pipe forming
  • a mezzanine teaching floor featuring touch-screen display monitor and individual work stations

Science & Engineering Innovation Centre

Runshaw College

The Science & Engineering Innovation Centre at Runshaw College is fitted out with cutting-edge industry standard engineering and science laboratories and workshops, following feedback from local employers and research into future industry needs.

The facility also houses a new main reception, offices, welfare facilities and full access via a fire lift linking both the old and new building.

The SEIC accommodates up to 400 new students across a wide range of engineering and science courses to complement Runshaw’s current provisions, including apprenticeships at all levels, to career degrees.
